Tom Loomis

Tom Loomis has been coming to Captiva Island for most of his life. His Grandfather first visited Captiva in 1901 the year he graduated from Yale. Tom's Father came down here in the 20's and was the first honeymooner at 'Tween-Waters in 1936. The original Loomis property is the old ground level Tudor style home that is 6 or 8 homes before the start of the second "s" curve going north. Many years ago the road ran 200 yards West of where it is today and most of the "beach" homes were built far back from the water to a point where they couldn't see the Gulf, nor could beach walkers (the 4 or 5 per day) see them. It was all about being "laid back and quiet" where everybody knew everybody and there were no locks on the doors nor where locks even built into the doors. When we went away, we just closed the door and left! NO ROADS, NO CARS, NO NOISE, NO WATER, NO MOSQUITO CONTROL, NO AIR CONDITIONING. It wasn't all roses! The mosquito's were so thick you couldn't see out the screen door. To go outside as a little kid, you were instructed to carefully open the screen door (don't disturb the mosquito's) and quickly run 15 - 20 feet and let the door slam. The mosquito's would all settle back on the screen and we little kids would run for the beach, where mosquito's would not go.

Tom Loomis will be happy to tell you about the old days and history of Captiva, but you will have to ask him. He is semi-retired, owns a ranch in South Dakota where he operates a 6 bed bunkhouse for Pheasant, grouse, turkey, goose, deer and elk hunters visit sdpheasants.net (October to January).  Tom has been involved in the efforts to preserve and protect Captiva and prevent its reckless development. He founded The Captiva Island Homeowners Association, to fight sewers that guarantees the development of high rises on Captiva and was also a founder of the only 501 (c3) IRS tax exempt corporation on the island, In Trust For Captiva, which is a vehicle for people to donate money and take a 100% tax deduction, to use for the protection of Captiva. Don't be surprised if, as a renter, he doesn't invite you out fishing, or over for a drink, or to dinner, or just be surprised at his genuine like for visitors. He will make you feel at home and soon you will become one of the family!
